So… you just bought a fabulous new night stand (or better yet, you performed a DIY update on one you already had). In any case, now it’s time to add the finishing touches. Like any other surface in your home, you want to make sure to add a few key pieces to infuse personality. When accessorizing a bedside table, the items should be not only functional, but also personal and interesting.  Here are 7 key items that work for any bedside table. Depending on the size of yours, feel free to edit to ensure things don’t look too cluttered.

1. Alarm Clock: Clearly in the functional category, but this one tres chic (RueDesLouves, Etsy)

2. Lamp: Another necessary yet beautiful addition (Arteriors Home, Zinc Door)

3. Small Flower Arrangement: One view of these in the morning, and your day is off to a great start (inspiration found at haute-hostess.com)

4. Picture Frame: To ensure that loved-one is close to you at all times (Michael Aram, Neiman Marcus)

5. Candle: In case you need to create a certain ambiance in the bedroom 🙂 (Sydney Hale Co. Candle, School House Electric)

6. Jewelry Holder: Fun and functional! (ModCloth)

7. Water Carafe: A thoughtful touch, especially in a guest bedroom (similar; Design Within Reach)

Anything you have on your bedside table that’s not on this list?

Ciao for Now,

♥♥ Vicky

This past weekend was quite productive, most notably I finished re-designing our living room which has been a work in progress.  We were having our first BBQ of the season, so it was good motivation to finish my first project.

BEFORE: Bland room with white walls and vertical blinds… yikes!

You may recall from my Modern Elegance post, I had a general style and color palette in mind (and I knew I wanted a sunburst mirror :)).  My goal was to transform the room playing off of the original charm but adding vibrance, elegance and a little rustic, ethnic charm…

AFTER:

So… how did I do? I’m sure I’ll keep making minor changes over time, but I’m pretty happy with the outcome.  Now… on to the next room!

Trend Alert: Sunburst Mirrors

Now that mid-century modern is all the rage (thanks, Mad Men), sunburst mirrors have made a definite come-back. Mirrors have always been a design must-have due to their ability to reflect light and make a room brighter. Sunburst mirrors, however, take it a step further by adding a point of view and interest to a room. Often a conversation piece, these mirrors come in many sizes and styles. I picked a few below that show a range of design sensibilities.

Aztec Aesthetic – Ballard Designs

Shining Star – Lamps Plus

Flower Power – Neiman Marcus

Simply Mod – Target

Eco Chic – Crate & Barrel

Yearning for a sunburst mirror yet? I’m planning to add one to my living room. Which one should I choose?

Modern Elegance

blue, chair, chartreuse, fireplace, rug, silver, sofa

My husband and I recently moved into a cute little house we’re renting in Los Angeles.  It has lots of charm which I love, but more importantly, it has lots of projects. 😉  I’ve decided to start in the living room, and although it’s not done yet, I thought I’d share a little bit about the journey…

First things first, the color palette:

What I love about the palette is that it’s unexpected and whimsical.  The room is a bit dark, so I wanted to make sure to infuse vibrant colors (like the blue and chartreuse), and then ground these with some deep wood tones (including the hard wood floors).  A dark room can always benefit from reflective surfaces, so I plan to use silver accents to do just that.

The first place I brought in the blue was the walls which we painted in BEHR Ultra in Millstream.  See what I mean about the charm… love!

Next I brought in a fabulous rug…

To balance out the feminine rug and ground all of the blue, I decided to go with a modern sofa in a masculine brown tweed. The sofa hasn’t arrived yet, but, rest assured, when it does, I’ll be jazzing it up with beautiful accent pillows that help carry through the color palette.

Lastly, I created this little vignette that anchors the right side of the room.  I love how it brings together all aspects of the color palette. These chairs were actually floor samples we got for a great price at West Elm (no shame in bargain hunting!)

Well, that’s all for now. I’ll complete the room once our sofa arrives. Stay tuned for pics of the final product with all the finishing touches… so excited!
