I had the pleasure of attending the Venice Garden & Home Tour this past Saturday. It was a gorgeous day to walk around the neighborhood and be inspired. The homes and gardens were absolutely wonderful. My favorite quote of the day from a fellow tour-goer: “I just went from admiration to envy”.

Envy aside, I had a great time and can’t wait to share. I’ve decided to break up the highlights into a 7-day series. I’ll start from the outside and work my way in. Today’s post covers exteriors.

While many of the homes we toured displayed the best of modern architecture and design, there were also those who chose to restore and embrace the home’s original aesthetic. Other homes focused on creating the most inviting outdoor space anyone could ask for. Here are the exterior highlights.

What’s next? Part 2 of the series will highlight the quintessential Venice garden staple… Do you think you know what it is? You’ll find out tomorrow… stay tuned! 🙂

Speaking of the DIY painted dresser… once the painting is done there’s one last step – adding the perfect knob.  Here are some of my faves. Each knob has its own style that can add the perfect finishing touch to your fab “new” dresser.

7 Ways to Showcase Your Animal Instincts

12 Thursday Jul 2012

One of the most important rules in design is to ensure that your space showcases some personality. Animal themed decor is one way to inject a bit of playfulness into any room.  Here are seven ways to display your appreciation of the animal kingdom as well as your fabulous sense of style.

1. Artwork – Fido just got a facelift… and so did your space! The colors in this dog portrait are so vibrant and hip, your room will get an instant dose of personality. {poshtots}

2. Tabletop Accessories – Gold accessories are all the rage, and I’m loving love the gold bird detail on these plates.  The color palette is elegant and contemporary while the birds infuse a bit of whimsy. {laylagrayce}

3. Accent Pillows: How lovely is this peacock pillow? This piece is so versatile it fits with nearly any design style, from traditional to contemporary to rustic. {wellappointedhouse}

4. Wall Decor – What do you get when you mix disco and taxidermy… this bedazzled work of art!  While it’s not the most traditional piece, it’s a fabulous option if your husband insists on mounting a stag’s head in your house 🙂 {zincdoor}

5. Decorative Accessories – This little guy would fit in with any modern decor and is absolutely adorable. For once it’s totally appropriate to discuss the elephant in the room. {allmodern}

6. Wallpaper – This panda bear wallpaper lends cool factor to any space… get it?!? 🙂  When this pattern repeats on the wall, it becomes an abstract and contemporary backdrop to your space. {2modern}

7. Bedding – If the sight of this flamingo bedding conjures up memories of a 1980’s Miami Vice episode… good!  You have just added a fun “conversation piece” to your guest bedroom.  It’s cute, it’s modern… and feels romantic too. {dwell}

Moral of the story?  Trust your animal instincts and have some fun!

The Patriotic Patio

Ahhh, July 4th… BBQ, fireworks, fun in the sun, and most importantly, a day off of work :).  In honor of Independence Day, I thought I’d focus on an outdoor space and keep things festive with a red, white and blue color scheme. I’m not one to embrace the ‘Yankee Doodle’ literal interpretation, so here’s my take on the patriotic patio.

Whether designing an indoor or outdoor space, I love to mix different styles to create a space that feels unique and inviting.  Here’s how I brought the space together:

First I brought in rustic and nautical elements.  The rustic items play off of the existing horizontal wooden panels and preserve the natural feel of the outdoor space. The nautical pieces hint toward the waters that lie beyond the infinity pool.

1. Planter – Anthropologie | 2. Table – Wayfair.com| 3. Light Fixture – Anthropologie | 4. Hammock – Anthropologie| 5. Rug – Wayfair.com | 6. Pillow – bludot.com

Next I brought in modern and contemporary touches both of which add pops of color.  The modern elements follow the architectural details of the home, while the contemporary elements tie everything together creating a cohesive and functional space.

1. Bench – Wayfair.com| 2. Lounge Chair – similar lexmod.com| 3. Dining Chair, 4. Vase, 5. Pillow, 6. Umbrella, 7. Stool – all Wayfair.com

So, that’s my take on the patriotic patio. Cheers to mixing design styles to create a one-of-a-kind space, and showing patriotism all summer long.

Happy 4th of July!

New Beginnings & First Impressions

buffet, California, contemporary, credenza, Dining Room, entryway, foyer, furniture, glam, lacquered furniture, mid-century modern, modern, sideboard, wood

My mother-in-law has asked for my help with a little project: her entryway table; but this project calls for a little bit of background…

A few years ago now, my husband’s parents completed building their dream home.  Although they love their new home, the way it came about was not so pleasant.  They live in San Diego County and, in 2007 their house burned down in the San Diego Wildfires.   While it was a devastating event, they chose to rebuild on their same lot, and now reside in a beautiful modern home with wonderful tile floors, exotic wood finishes, and paint and countertops in warm red tones.

Clearly, building a home from scratch is quite an undertaking, so while most of the house is complete (and beautiful) there are still small projects…

Here is a picture of the current entry way console.

Currently a hand-me-down credenza occupies the space, and while it’s mid-century modern design matches well with the rest of the home, it has seen better days, and is under-sized for the space. In looking for a new console/credenza, we want to keep to a modern feel, but because it’s an entryway, it’s important that we make a good first impression.  Here are the options I’ve picked:

This first option is very similar to the current credenza, but the size and scale is a better fit for the space.  It has a mid-century modern feel which will make it blend in nicely with many of the existing furnishings, and offers great storage! (Grada Server; Steve Silver Company)

The next option continues with the mid-century modern them, but the white lacquer adds some modern pop. While it’s a simple piece, the color and finish make it anything but boring. (Dumont Buffett; West Elm)

This piece is what I would call a “safe bet” (which is not a bad thing).  It has more of a traditional/contemporary feel, but because the house is already modern, it can help to add a bit of warmth.  What I like most about this piece is the open, airy space between the floor and the drawers.  It doesn’t take up a lot of visual space like the prior options, and allows for decorative accessorizing on the bottom shelf. (Cordova Console Table; Cooper Classics)

And this is what I would call the opposite of a safe bet… and I think it’s fabulous! Talk about making a first impression! What I love about this table is that is commands attention and adds a bit of glamour.  Another bonus is that it comes in multiple colors, so you can balance the “loud” design with a more muted color.  The champagne or java color ways are great options. (Malibu Console; Malibu Loft)

Last but not least we have what might be ‘just right’.  The wood tones and clean lines of this piece are very much in keeping with the mid-century modern feel.  While it takes up some visual space; it’s not as “heavy” as some of the earlier options and still provides storage.  It’s a great piece that is both beautiful and functional.  I’d suggest adding some interesting hardware to infuse a bit of glamour. (Calista Sideboard; Crate & Barrel)

Do you have a favorite?  I’ll keep you posted on what we end up choosing.  Even if it’s not one of the exact pieces above, I’m pretty confident we’ll be able to narrow down a style to help us make a great first impression in a beautiful home.
