Okay, so my new obsession is geometric decor.  There’s something so crisp and clean about the lines, and it’s absolutely chic.  I’m loving how the shapes breathe openness into each piece.

I thought I’d start a new series called “Weekend Wrap-up”.  Don’t worry, I won’t bore you with all of my weekend charades, but from time to time, I’ll give you a glimpse into what I do in my free time.

I’m a bargain shopper and have a slight addiction to private sale websites. Most recently I bought a mirror from MyHabit.  On Saturday, I finally got around to hanging it. The mirror has a beautiful zebra-wood inspired gold frame which gives it an ethnic, chic feel. I decided to hang it in my dining room directly across from the window to help add light.

Sunday was a shopping day and I hit Abbot Kinney! 🙂  First I treated myself to this awesome handmade aged brass and neon necklace I bought from Strim Vintage.

Then I visited Urbanic for the first time (and fell in love).  I bought these adorable papers from Snow & Graham (floral) and Midori (blue polka dot). Stay tuned for a chic DIY project that I’m planning for them.

I don’t know about you, but I’m super excited about the Olympics starting today. I get so sucked in (sometimes too much and I stay up way past my bed-time and hate myself in the morning). In any case, I wanted to wish Team USA (and all the other countries :)) good luck, and am dedicating this post to them.

As for the rest of us who aren’t so athletically gifted, I offer you a way to go for gold anytime.

One of my go-to websites when I’m creating a design board is olioboard.com.  From time-to-time olioboard hosts design challenges where contestants submit virtual design concepts.  Currently they’re running a poolhouse design challenge.  It sounded like fun, so I decided to submit an entry.

Aesthetically, I wanted the room to be fun and whimsical with lots of vibrant colors.  I chose blues and greens to bring the colors of nature and the pool inside. Functionally, there were a couple of things to consider.  I wanted to ensure there was a sitting area meant for relaxing and getting a break from the sun; and I wanted to have an area where people could sit down and enjoy lunch or a snack.

So… here’s the final product…

Now that mid-century modern is all the rage (thanks, Mad Men), sunburst mirrors have made a definite come-back. Mirrors have always been a design must-have due to their ability to reflect light and make a room brighter. Sunburst mirrors, however, take it a step further by adding a point of view and interest to a room. Often a conversation piece, these mirrors come in many sizes and styles. There’s something about mirrored furniture that’s just so chic.  It has the ability to add sophistication, glamour and elegance all at once.  From a practical standpoint, mirrored furniture makes a room brighter by reflecting light, and adds just a little bit of sparkle. While I don’t recommend too many pieces in one room, having one key piece can really make a room.  Best of all, you can find mirrored furniture to suit any design style. I found this rug while browsing Gilt Home and I love it!  It’s so unique and is a prime example of the southwest trend I’ve been seeing so much of lately.

Southwest style tends to have lots of deep, rich colors like the blues and golds in the rug.  It’s often also associated with shades of mauve and turquoise, but sometimes those feel a bit too literal.  It’s all about natural and organic elements, so leather, wood and brass prevail… along with anything in an earth tone.  Most of all, it’s about casual comfort and warmth!

I decided to challenge myself to “furnish” a southwest inspired room… and, since I found my inspiration on Gilt, I designed the whole room with items available on Gilt Home (no, they’re not paying me for this post, it just happens to be one of my favorite sites!) So, here it is… what do you think?
