Happy Saturday everyone!  Today’s post is in response to a question from one of my readers. She just bought this BEAUTIFUL sofa…

20140226-223104.jpg

Gorgeous, right?!?

So now she’s looking for a rug to complement it. I happen to know that she has a toddler, so I decided to go with options that have a darker base color (spill, what spill?).  I also wanted to make sure to not pick anything that was crazy expensive (well, maybe just one).  I’m giving her a few different options depending on the style and feel she’s envisioning for her space.

So… here are 4 picks from one of my secret go to sites for rugs

sophisticated & Contemporary

20140226-222231.jpg
Keno Trellis Rug

refined & Traditional

20140226-222310.jpg
Finland Oramo Cobblestone Rug

Fun & Graphic

20140226-222343.jpg
Randiante Nuo Chevron Rug

bold & Eclectic

20140226-222419.jpg
Multi-Color Ikat Rug

Fingers crossed she likes one of them.

♥♥ Vicky

In reading one of my favorite blogs, I came across this image and had mixed feelings.  I loved seeing all of the beautiful vintage pieces and the storage space looked functional, but I was left wondering if there was just too much going on.

Speaking of the DIY painted dresser… once the painting is done there’s one last step – adding the perfect knob.  Here are some of my faves. Each knob has its own style that can add the perfect finishing touch to your fab “new” dresser.

Clockwise from top left: trendy/contemporary-no longer available, similar , modern, whimsical, antique, traditional, eclectic, feminine-no longer available, similar, shabby chic

The Patriotic Patio

Ahhh, July 4th… BBQ, fireworks, fun in the sun, and most importantly, a day off of work :).  In honor of Independence Day, I thought I’d focus on an outdoor space and keep things festive with a red, white and blue color scheme. I’m not one to embrace the ‘Yankee Doodle’ literal interpretation, so here’s my take on the patriotic patio.

Whether designing an indoor or outdoor space, I love to mix different styles to create a space that feels unique and inviting.  Here’s how I brought the space together:

First I brought in rustic and nautical elements.  The rustic items play off of the existing horizontal wooden panels and preserve the natural feel of the outdoor space. The nautical pieces hint toward the waters that lie beyond the infinity pool.

1. Planter – Anthropologie | 2. Table – Wayfair.com| 3. Light Fixture – Anthropologie | 4. Hammock – Anthropologie| 5. Rug – Wayfair.com | 6. Pillow – bludot.com

Next I brought in modern and contemporary touches both of which add pops of color.  The modern elements follow the architectural details of the home, while the contemporary elements tie everything together creating a cohesive and functional space.

1. Bench – Wayfair.com| 2. Lounge Chair – similar lexmod.com| 3. Dining Chair, 4. Vase, 5. Pillow, 6. Umbrella, 7. Stool – all Wayfair.com

So, that’s my take on the patriotic patio. Cheers to mixing design styles to create a one-of-a-kind space, and showing patriotism all summer long.

Happy 4th of July!

It’s the last day in our 7-day series covering the Venice Garden & Home Tour. We close out the series exploring what makes Venice, Venice… its culture.

Despite the $1M+ entry price-point for a home, Venice Beach remains a hub of counter-culture in the middle of Los Angeles.  Art and sculpture are a key way its residents express their individuality and share their beliefs.  One of the most fun and interesting parts of the tour, here’s the highlight gallery:

  • Statement Art

  • Functional Art (it’s a chair made of driftwood)

  • His & Her Art

  • Political Art

  • Repurposed Art

  • Tranquil Art

  • Antler Art

  • Creepy-Crawly Art

This brings our series on the Venice Garden & Home Tour to a close.  Hope you’ve enjoyed the highlights.

Tomorrow, it’s back to great decor to help you add personality to your home.

Series: Venice Garden & Home Tour – Picture Walls

A must-have design element in any home is a ‘picture wall’, and that’s what we explore in part 6 of our 7-day series for the Venice Garden & Home Tour. Whether it’s family photos, abstract art, or even a skate board…, picture walls add interest to a room and create a focal point.  Here are 5 examples that each tell their own story.

  • By painting the wall a flat charcoal color, the artwork on this picture wall really pops.  The addition of a skateboard takes this picture wall to the next level turning it into a true art installation… how fabulous!

  • This picture wall has a casual feel.  The homeowner installed 3 narrow shelves allowing her to display a ton of photos overlapping on one another

  • A mid-century modern vignette, this picture wall is simple and succinct.  It has a clear point of view transporting the viewer back to the 1960’s.

  • This picture wall is both organic and eclectic.  By concentrating the photos in the center of the wall and expanding horizontally, it creates a timeline feel with no one picture dominating the space.

  • To really make an impact in a room and add interest to a blank white wall, this homeowner installed 3 large-scale vibrant prints.  In contrast to the more organic example above, this installation is structured but still has a ton of personality.

What’s Next: Tomorrow we wrap up our 7-day series and I’ve decided to save the best example’s of Venice’s eclectic style for last.  Stay Tuned!

Part 4 of our Venice Garden & Home Tour focuses in on lighting.  Clearly a necessity from a functional standpoint, lighting also helps create a point of view in a room.  From traditional to modern, simple to over-the-top; the light fixtures we saw on the tour were varied and fabulous.  Here are the highlights:

Outdoor lighting gone chic

Industrial sconce – I love how you can see the filament

Mid-century modern masterpiece

The perfect mix of contemporary and modern – what a conversation piece!

Lighting with a personal touch – those are individual notes

Simple and colorful X 3

A work of art… literally!

What’s next? In part 5, we’ll focus on one of the most important rooms in the house… that is if you’re hungry 🙂

Chic de Mayo

Aztec, bath mat, candle, eclectic, embroidered, lamp, pillow, planter, plaque, pottery, rug, sconce, southwest, Spanish, table lamp, vase, wrought iron

In honor of Cinco de Mayo tomorrow, I thought I’d go on a hunt for chic mexican-inspired decor.  Of course, the key to keeping things stylish is to step beyond the literal (no mexican wrestling masks please).  The non-literal version of Mexican decor includes everything from ancient Aztec art, to traditional Spanish designs, to modern southwestern style.  Vibrant colors, curved wrought iron and clay pottery are just a few design elements that come to mind.

Here are a few picks that work for a Cinco de Mayo fiesta space or an every day contemporary-eclectic room.

Planter – La Fuente Imports

Floor/Bath Mat – Anthropologie

Candle Wall Sconce – Hobby Lobby

Lamp – Zinc Door

Aztec Plaque – Overstock

Embroidered Pillow – Cost Plus World Market

Any mexican-inspired pieces you’re thinking of incorporating into your space?  You can count me in for the Anthropologie mat and the Aztec plaque!

Trend Alert: Sunburst Mirrors

Now that mid-century modern is all the rage (thanks, Mad Men), sunburst mirrors have made a definite come-back. Mirrors have always been a design must-have due to their ability to reflect light and make a room brighter. Sunburst mirrors, however, take it a step further by adding a point of view and interest to a room. Often a conversation piece, these mirrors come in many sizes and styles. I picked a few below that show a range of design sensibilities.

Aztec Aesthetic – Ballard Designs

Shining Star – Lamps Plus

Flower Power – Neiman Marcus

Simply Mod – Target

20120429-211103.jpg

Eco Chic – Crate & Barrel

Yearning for a sunburst mirror yet? I’m planning to add one to my living room. Which one should I choose?
