So, clearly I have baby and kiddos on the brain.  And as I continue to await Baby #2’s arrival, I’ve become slightly obsessed with redecorating Keira’s nursery.  Keira & Baby #2 will be sharing a room, so I have the perfect excuse to change things around (even though Baby will be in our bedroom for the first couple of months).

First it was Rag Dolls, and now, I can’t get enough of these whimsical pillows. They’re all over Etsy (and I love supporting all my Etsy peeps), but even some of our bigger box friends have some adorable options.

Here’s a round-up of my top 10 picks…

10 Whimsical Cushions for Kiddos || HOMErandRuth.com
1. Stuffed Cat – Dancing in the Rains (Etsy) | 2. Pink Cat Face – Clairey Lou Creations (Etsy) | 3. Unicorn – The Fox in the Attic (Etsy) | 4. Happy Cloud – The Land of Nod | 5. Pink House – Plumed (Esty) | 6. Lady Lamb – Anthropologie | 7. Yellow Hippo – Levchenko Dolls (Etsy) | 8. Yellow Cat Face – Sleepy King (Etsy) | 9. Whale – Big Stuffed (Etsy) | 10. Apple – Anthropologie

Aren’t these fun!  Which one is your favorite?

Ciao for Now,

♥♥ Vicky

It’s amazing how time flies, I mean it’s Monday again already… where did the weekend go?  What’s even crazier?  My baby is turning 1 this week!!  I can’t believe it!

This weekend we’re throwing a little shindig to celebrate.  Nothing major, just family and close friends.  Of course that didn’t prevent me from dedicating an entire Pinterest board to the event and buying decorations…

Just thought I’d share some of the images that have inspired me in my party planning.  Feel free to check out my ‘Keira’s 1st Birthday’ Pinterest board for more.

Ask H&R: Double Duty Office Chair

TGIF, right?!? Today’s post is once again in response to a question from one of my readers (who also happens to be a great friend ♥).  She just moved into a new place and is looking for a chair for her home office.  She’s ready for something fun with a pop of color or a pattern (or both), and something that can be moved into the living home for extra seating for guests.  Both her office and living room have patterned rugs (one has an ikat pattern and the other is geometric), so I wanted to be sure not to pick anything that would compete too much with those patterns… oh, and the rooms have lots of grey in them.

With all that in mind, I started the search. I was definitely steering clear of the traditional, boring office chair with wheels, but I was still able to find lots of options. Here are some that are particularly fun and fabulous.

That’s Toile Folks

Looking to add a little old world elegance to your space?  Try toile!

Originating in Europe, and popular in American Colonial design, toile is a traditional yet anything but boring design aesthetic.  It’s a great way to add a healthy dose of personality to your space.

Wondering how to incorporate it into your space… I’m so glad you asked:

1. Wallpaper – How fab is this bathroom?!? Traditional yet modern. {source}

2. Dinnerware – The toile design aesthetic is perfect for a formal dining room, but if you have commitment issues, dinnerware is the perfect option. {source}

3. Furniture – This custom wallpapered dresser exudes femininity and I’m loving it! {source}

4. Accessories – Another non-committal option is accessorizing with toile.  This wastebasket is perfect for a guest bathroom or bedroom.  I especially love the mixing of traditional toile with asian design. {source}

5. Headboard – Nothing says girly like a pink toile headboard.  How great would this be for a little girl’s room?!? {source}

Design My Poolhouse

One of my go-to websites when I’m creating a design board is olioboard.com.  From time-to-time olioboard hosts design challenges where contestants submit virtual design concepts.  Currently they’re running a poolhouse design challenge.  It sounded like fun, so I decided to submit an entry.

Aesthetically, I wanted the room to be fun and whimsical with lots of vibrant colors.  I chose blues and greens to bring the colors of nature and the pool inside. Functionally, there were a couple of things to consider.  I wanted to ensure there was a sitting area meant for relaxing and getting a break from the sun; and I wanted to have an area where people could sit down and enjoy lunch or a snack.

So… here’s the final product…

What do you think?  If you like it, I’d love for you visit the site and vote for my space.

Thanks for all of the support!

Glam Restful Romantic Bedroom

04 Wednesday Apr 2012

Posted by HOMErandRuth in Uncategorized

≈ 1 Comment

When it comes to designing bedrooms, I have 3 rules:

1. The room must be a place that invites relaxation, tranquility and restfulness.  This means a muted, simple and cool color palette is a must: think grey, pale blue, lavender or pale green.

2. A bedroom should feel romantic.  Things that evoke romance in a room? Curved lines, soft simple bedding and ethereal details like lace and glass.

3. Lastly, I always like to infuse a little bit of glamour.  In a bedroom this means reflective surfaces, wallpaper and ALWAYS, ALWAYS a fabulous chandelier.

Keeping my 3 key principles in mind, here’s my latest design for a relaxing, romantic and glamorous bedroom

1. Lace-inspired wallpaper: Graham & Brown Jewel Wallpaper – 2modern, $85/roll; | 2. Chandelier: Bellina Chandelier in Platinum – Z Gallerie, $399; | 3. Mouthblown glass lamp: Lafayette 27″ Table Lamp – Home Decorators Collection, $249; | 4. Drapery panels: Ciudad Window Panel in sand – Pier 1 Imports, $32; | 5. Rug: Jaipur Rugs Capri Flat Weave – Gilt Home, $45-$399; | 6. Mirrored nightstand: Amelie Mirrored Nightstand – Horchow, $799 | 7. Bench: Denison Mirrored Bench – Horchow, $549 | 8. Bedding: Donna Karan City Strip Duvet – Gilt Home, $165-$215 | 9. Upholstered headboard: Pondicherry Headboard with Nailheads in Mist Linen – Serena & Lily, $1,250-$2,050.

So, what do you think?

Trend Alert: Alhambra Old World Charm

02 Monday Apr 2012

Posted by HOMErandRuth in Uncategorized

≈ Leave a comment

One of the biggest trends in interior design right now is Alhambra-inspired decor and patterns. Alhambra is an old palace in Granada, Spain that represents the brilliant detail of moorish architecture. The key design elements are arches and curvy shapes that seem on the one hand sensual, and on the other hand playful. I was lucky enough to visit the grounds of Alhambra a few years back. Here are a few pics from my trip.

So how does all of this old world charm translate into modern day chic?

I’m so glad you asked 😉

20120402-203535.jpg
1. Tempaper – Marrakesh removable wallpaper in honey jade; $98 per roll | 2. Home Decorators Collection – Ava Flush Mount; $239 | 3. Ballard Designs – Bella Mirror Leaner; $369 | 4. Serena & Lily – Chakki in white with maize spade fabric; $450 | 5. Horchow – Panthea Rug; $169-$646 | 6. giardino (etsy); red and turquoise ogee pillow case; $42

I actually have the Horchow Panthea rug in my dining room, and love it! Is there an Alhambra-inspired piece that you’re coveting?
